Date:
Sept. 20, 2016
On
Fri., Sept 30 and Sat., Oct 1: The Bijou Film Center will present two
classic films about time travel, “La
Jetée” and
“Time Bandits,” in its screening room at 304 E. Broad St.
Admission:
$5 at the door. No advance tickets.
Show
times: 6 p.m., 9:05 p.m. With both shows “La
Jetée” plays first, then “Time Bandits.”
“La
Jetée”
(1962): 28 minutes. B&W. Directed by Chris Marker. Cast: Davos
Hanich, Hélène Chatelain, Jen Négroni. Note: This short classic
from the New Wave era about memory, imagination, longing and time is
unforgettable. Maker's background as a writer and still photographer
are well used. With less than a half-hour to tell his time-traveling
story the iconoclastic director offers viewers a stunning example of
how less can be more – way more.
“Time
Bandits” (1981): 110 minutes. Color. Directed by Terry Gilliam.
Cast: Sean Connery, John Cleese, Shelley Duvall, Craig Warnock, Ralph
Richardson, Michael Palin. Note: An 11-year-old boy's bedroom
wardrobe (closet) becomes a portal for time travel. So naturally, he
encounters Robin Hood, Napoleon, a troop of dwarfs, etc. Terry
Gilliam and his fellow Monty Python colleague Michael Palin wrote the
delightfully fanciful script.
Beer,
wine and soft drinks will be for sale.
